Infected wheat: BJP wants minister to go

Stepping up its campaign against the import of red wheat, BJP on Monday demanded resignation of Maharashtra food and civil supplies minister Sunil Tatkare for ordering auction of “infected and sub-standard” wheat through a tender.

MUMBAI: Stepping up its campaign against the import of red wheat, BJP on Monday demanded resignation of Maharashtra food and civil supplies minister Sunil Tatkare for ordering auction of infected and sub-standard wheat through a tender.

The food and civil supplies ministry headed by Mr Tatkare, who belongs to NCP, had invited bids from bakers and flour mills to purchase wheat declared unfit for human consumption by public as well as private laboratories, charged former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya on Monday.

Mr Somaiya said it was pointed out to the minister that a large quality of wheat lying in government storage houses was infected and unfit for human consumption. Yet, Mr Tatkare did not withdraw the decision to auction this wheat, said Mr Somaiya. He claimed the state public health laboratory had certified 96% of the stock of wheat stored in states storage houses as unfit for human consumption.

Of the 124 samples tested at the laboratory, 119 have been certified unfit for human consumption. These samples were submitted to the laboratory by collectors and tehsildars of various districts. Yet, the food and civil supplies ministry issued a resolution for auction of the same stock of wheat to bakers and flour mills on May 9, Mr Somaiya said.
