'Industrialisation to continue, despite Nandigram'

Notwithstanding the setback at Nandigram, the Left Front government in West Bengal was determined to go ahead with industrialisation, Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee said on Tuesday.

HALDIA (WB): Notwithstanding the setback at Nandigram, the Left Front government in West Bengal was determined to go ahead with industrialisation, Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee said on Tuesday.

"My government's industrial policy is quite clear," Bhattacharjee told a CPI(M) rally here, his first in East Midnapore district after the March 14 police firing at Nandigram left 14 dead. Expressing regret over the Nandigram incident triggered by plans to set up a chemical hub there, Bhattacharjee said "it is not my government's policy to ask police to open fire on the people and commit atrocities.

"A misunderstanding has been created. We will convince the people of Nandigram what my government wanted to do for them. But I reiterate that we will not go to Nandigram for industry," the Chief Minister said hinting at setting up of the chemical hub here. Bhattacharjee criticised opposition parties for 'misguiding people' on industrialisation and making 'a concerted move to create anarchy'.

"Haldia will be the role model for industrial development in West Bengal. We want more Haldias in our state," he said. Bhattacharjee, flanked by CPI(M) MP Lakshman Seth, said that people of the state were in favour of industry. "West Bengal is making a turnaround in industry."
