Indo-US nuke deal in best interest of the country: Sonia
Terming the Indo-US nuclear deal as a historic step, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi said on Thursday that it would help accelerate the country's pace of development on par with the developed nations.
"Energy is the greatest need of the country now. The nuclear deal is a historic step in this direction. We need more nuclear plants to provide power for our homes, for our villages, for our towns, for our industries and for the whole country," she said, while addressing a massive public meeting in this drought-prone town in Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh.
Setting the tone for Congress campaign for the elections due early next year, Gandhi spoke extensively about welfare and development schemes being implemented across the country, particularly in Andhra Pradesh.
Skirting the new political challenge from the actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi, she said Congress alone has the capacity to take the country forward economically in an atmosphere of brotherhood among different religions.
"No other party, whether TDP or any other party, is as committed as we are for the people of the country, especially the poor. It is Congress alone which cares for each and every citizen of this country."
The Congress chief said her party firmly believed in secularism and equal respect for all religions. A large number of people from Rayalaseema attended the rally, billed in response to a public meeting addressed by Chiranjeevi at temple town of Tirupati on August 26 to launch his party.
