Indo-US N-deal won't affect strategic projects: Kakodkar

The draft agreement between India and IAEA would not affect the country’s strategic programme, chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission said.

MUMBAI: The draft agreement between India and IAEA to help implement Indo-US nuclear deal ensures continuity in fuel supply and would not affect the countrys strategic programme, chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission Anil Kakodkar said on Thursday.

The agreement ensures the continuity in fuel supply as it is a commercial deal between the potential suppliers and India, Mr Kakodkar said.

Different contingencies have been provided for building a stockpile of nuclear fuel from multiple countries in keeping with the 123 agreement with the US, he said. The stockpiling of fuel to ensure continuity of supply for the lifetime of reactors has been embedded in the umbrella safeguard agreement with the IAEA, Mr Kakodkar said.

In our understanding with the US, we have the element of continuity of fuel supply, the possibility of fuel stockpiling and corrective measures, he said. The corrective measures in the IAEA agreement were the same as those in the draft agreement with US, the scientist said. It is our sovereign decision at a point in time. Once we start collaboration we should be able to continue it for the lifetime of the reactors, Mr Kakodkar said.
