Indo-US lobbyists meet Left, BJP on N-deal
A group of Indian American lobbyists on Wednesday met Left and BJP leaders in a bid to understand their opposition to the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal.
The eight-member delegation led by chairman of US India Political Action Committee (USINPAC) Sanjay Puri met CPI leader D Raja, who explained the Left parties’ opposition to the deal. “We wanted to genuinely understand what the objections are.
Mr Raja walked us through the elements of their public stance,” said Usinpac director Robin Sachdeva. Mr Raja also handed over a booklet listing their opposition not just to the deal but also joint naval exercises with the US, illustrating the ideological differences that are at the heart of the nuclear stand off between the government and the Left parties.
The delegation also met with BJP president Rajnath Singh and BJP leader Arun Shourie. The BJP leaders told the delegation that their demands were that a parliamentary committee should be set up to examine the details of the nuclear deal by the time of the winter session of Parliament.
The lobbyists, who will go back to the US and explain the political situation to US Congress members and the powerful American Indian community, had met with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday night.
