Indo-US anti-terror cooperation increasing

FBI had alerted the Indian security establishment about LeT plans to carry out a major terror strike in India

NEW DELHI: The FBI had alerted the Indian security establishment about LeT plans to carry out a major terror strike in India even as it tracked movements and conversations of its national David Coleman Headley before arresting him recently for plotting terror attacks in Denmark and India.

The FBI had shared the intelligence with us (on the LeTs subversive plans for India), an MHA official told ET. The intelligence is said to have been routed through the Multi-agency Centre (MAC) for immediate action, which included beefing up security at all vulnerable spots and vital installations.

The alert is yet another example of increasing cooperation between the US and India on tackling the terror threat. It also vindicates Indias point that Islamabad has done little post-26/11 to dismantle the terror infrastructure on its soil or act against outfits like the LeT, which continue to plot terror acts against India despite being declared as defunct by the Pakistan.

India has repeatedly said that though there has not been any terror attack in the country since 26/11, the threat from terrorist outfits like LeT and JeM has not diminished in any way. India continues to be vulnerable, home minister P Chidambaram maintains while insisting that constant vigil, better preparedness and a swift response are the only ways to tackle the threat.

US national David Coleman Headley, 49, was arrested earlier in October by FBIs Joint Terrorism Task Force at OHare International Airport before boarding a flight to Philadelphia.
