Indo-Pak train blast toll rises to 67

PANIPAT: The death toll from the firebombing of a train from India to Pakistan rose to 67 with the recovery of another charred body from the burned out carriages, a top police official told media on Monday.

"We now have an official count of 67 bodies recovered from the (blast) site," Haryana state director general of police Rajiv Dalal told media. "Thirteen others have been injured and the death toll is not likely to rise unless any of those wounded succumbed in hospital," Dalal said by telephone.

A ball of fire raced through two passenger carriages around midnight Sunday in Haryana's Panipat district, 100 kilometres (60 miles) north of New Delhi. The twice-weekly service runs from the Indian capital to the Pakistani city of Lahore. Dalal said investigators were trying to establish the number of Pakistanis killed in the attack.

"The process is on to determine how many of those killed are women and children, their nationalities and their identities," the state police chief said. "I am told that five persons have so far been identified, but we will have to wait for some more time before we have the full details," he added.

Explosives were found in two suitcases which directly pointed to sabotage, Indian Railways Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav said of the overnight blast on the "Samjhauta (Friendship) Express". The police chief dismissed unconfirmed reports that a suspected bomber had been detained by rail police.
