Indo-Canadians hail Congress-led UPA victory

Indo-Canadians hailed victory of Congress-led UPA alliance in polls.

TORONTO: Indo-Canadians hailed the victory of Congress-led UPA alliance in the general elections and said it was a verdict for stability and economic prosperity under the leadership of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

"With a slowdown in the global economy resulting in job losses and poor performance of the manufacturing and farm sectors, the re-election of the UPA is the best thing that has happened to India," B S Ubale, former commissioner of the Canadian Human rights Commission said.

"Peoples" mandate is in favour of stability, continuity, growth and economic progress, Ubale said.

The Congress-led coalition, riding on the back of years of economic growth, has done better than expected and so the vote for the United Progressive Alliance is the vote for its secular credentials and economic policies, Hemant Shah, a top Indo-Canadian businessman said.

"The vote for the Congress also signifies the emergence of Rahul Gandhi, the 38-year-old son of Congress President Sonia Gandhi and grandson of assassinated Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, as a star campaigner and a future national leader," Salim Momin, young legal professional from Gujarat said.

It is a time to celebrate the India democracy," Shamim Hasan, who lives in Ottawa, said. Hasan, who is a legal professional, said that the results show Indian peoples' were politically mature and have ability to make right choice.
