A group of militants, posing as officials from Pakistan's Airport Security Force, attacked the old terminal at Jinnah International Airport Karachi.

MUMBAI: India's key international airports have stepped up security after an attack by armed militants at Karachi's airport Sunday claimed more than 20 lives.

"After hearing the news last night, we have implemented enhanced security measures across airports in the country," Hemendra Singh, a Spokesman for Central Industrial Security Force, said.

"We have made the screening are security clearance areas much stricter. But we haven't got a brief to deploy additional manpower yet," he added.

A spokesperson at the Mumbai airport also confirmed security shall be beefed up at the airport.

Last night, a group of militants, posing as officials from Pakistan's Airport Security Force, attacked the old terminal at Jinnah International Airport Karachi. They were cornered and killed after a night-long battle.

For nearly six hours the Jinnah international airport which is close to the old airport terminal was shut down and all flights diverted as exchange of gunfire took place and heavy plumes of smoke and fire could be seen rising from inside the runaway area where the terrorists took cover in the hanger and engineering workshops.
