The Covid-19 death toll in India is about to touch the 200 mark, a Health Ministry update released today morning has revealed.

According to the latest data, as of 8 am, the official count of the dead stood at 199. The total number of confirmed coronavirus infection cases in the country is currently 6,412. Of these, 504 have been cured/discharged.

15 states and Union Territories account for more than 95 per cent of India's total coronavirus cases. Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, where cases are going up faster, account for a third of all detected cases in the country.

It essentially means that some of these 15 states/UTs are likely to need stricter lockdowns to flatten the curve, with all hotspots fully isolated. Some of the states have already initiated the required measures.

The global case count today crossed 1.6 million, with the number of the dead quickly approaching 1,00,000 (currently well over 95,000). America is now undoubtedly the global Covid capital, with total cases there numbering over 4.6 lakhs and deaths at over 16,000.
