The Congress on Tuesday quoted data to argue that the number of Indians giving up their citizenship has been increasing over the years. According to Congress, in the first 10 months of 2022, it reached the highest number. The opposition party attributed it to the current dip in economic growth and rising unemployment.

Quoting what he stated were the official figures of the ministry of external affairs, AICC spokesperson Gourav Vallabh said, "Average number of Indians per day giving up their Indian citizenship has grown 1.7 times in the last eight years. On average, 600 plus people per day gave up their Indian Citizenship in 2022." Vallabh said while in 2014 the number of Indians who gave up their citizenships stood at 1,29, 328 ( at an average of 354 a day), it rose to 163,570 people in 2021 (448 a day) and to a further 1,83,370 in the available data for January-October 2022 (604 per day or 1.7 times higher than 2014).
