Indian youngsters more aware of politics: Chetan Bhagat

NEW YORK: As India's mammoth national elections get underway, best-selling author Chetan Bhagat feels the country's youngsters are becoming increasingly aware of the political alternatives and any government that comes into power cannot afford to be "unaccountable".

Bhagat said a large number of youngsters are expressing their views about the nation's politics and leaders through social media and learning about various political alternatives in front of them.

This awareness has brought forward some issues that were not in the forefront in previous elections," Bhagat said.

"Corruption was not such a big issue in the last election, economic growth was not such a big issue," said Bhagat, who was in the city as part of his promotional tour for the upcoming movie ' 2 States', based on a book of the same name written by him on his life.

Bhagat said today's youth is engaged in bringing about a change in the country's politics and the social media has emerged as a powerful tool in their hands to voice their opinions.

"Any government cannot be too unaccountable, the media and social media do not spare you," he said, adding he hoped India votes for a stable government.

Apart from working on a new book, Bhagat has also written the screenplay for the upcoming Salman Khan-starrer 'Kick'.
