Indian troops in better position on China border, says MK Narayanan

Former NSA and West Bengal Governor MK Narayanan dismissed suggestions that the Chinese Army was in a dominating position along the Line of Actual Control.

NEW DELHI: Former NSA and West Bengal Governor MK Narayanan dismissed suggestions that the Chinese Army was in a dominating position along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) saying there are many areas where Indian troops are in an "advantageous position".

Dismissing a suggestion about Chinese "superiority" along the LAC, he said, "There are many areas along the Chinese border, where Indian troops are in an advantageous position."

The West Bengal Governor was speaking at the launch of a book titled ' NonAlignment 2.0: A Foreign and Strategic Policy for India in the Twenty First Century'.

He said sometimes India "underestimates" and sometimes it "over estimates" the security threat from China but Beijing's wish to have peace and tranquility along the border seems to be "genuine".

Commenting on country's 'No first-use nuclear doctrine', Narayanan said Pakistan has stated that it will not follow this policy in case of "serious military contingency".

"How do we react to this situation. I think we need informed assessment of the situation because I think to some extent, we tend to flounder whenever this question is asked," he said.
