TORONTO: A 23-year-old Indian student has been sentenced to 42 months in jail for his role in a street racing accident here two years ago that left a truck driver dead and his family "overwhelmed with grief".

Ravi Badhwar was handed down the ruling by Justice Bruce Glass on Thursday, who said he and two others raced at high speeds for more than 44 km, which led to collision of vehicles and ultimate death of 48-year-old trucker David Virgoe in June 2007, Canadian newspaper The Star reported.

Badhwar had shown no mitigating remorse for his actions that day, Glass added.

The Indian student, however, maintained his innocence throughout the trial, and only shook his head when asked if he had anything to say before being led away in handcuffs, the report said.

A jury had earlier found Badhwar "guilty of criminal negligence causing death by street racing and failing to remain at the scene of the fatal accident".

Justice Glass sentenced Badhwar to 30 months on the criminal negligence conviction and 12 months for failing to remain, both sentences to be served consecutively, it said. He also faces automatic deportation to India after serving out his sentence.
