Indian Scullers to leave for China tomorrow

Single sculler, Bajrang Lal Takhar and Manjit Singh and Devernder Kumar Khandwal, Light weight double scullers will leave Hyderabad tomorrow for China as part of acclimatisation and preparation for the Beijing Olympics.

CHENNAI: Single sculler, Bajrang Lal Takhar and Manjit Singh and Devernder Kumar Khandwal, Light weight double scullers will leave Hyderabad tomorrow for China as part of acclimatisation and preparation for the Beijing Olympics starting from August 9.

According to a press release from M.V.Sriram, Secretary General, Rowing Federation of India, the three scullers coached by Ismail Baig would have 20 days of intense practice at the Shanghai Water Sports Centre from thursday.

'The Indian team will proceed from Shanghai to Shunyi Olympic Rowing and Canoeing Park near Beijing, the Olympic venue on Aug one', he has said.

India's best bet is Takhar of the Rajputana Rifles of Indian Army and current Asian champion. He has won the gold at Korea last year and has also won the silver medal in Doha Asian Games in 2006.

Nineteen-year-old Manjit, a first year Bachelor of Arts student from Chandigarh, is a silver and bronze medalist at the Asian Championships at Korea last year and a gold medal winner at Colombo SAF Games in 2006. Devender, a product of CME-Army Rowing Node in Pune is a bronze medalist at the Asian Open championship in Korea last year.
