Indian relief supplies reach Myanmar: official

Two Indian ships and two military planes with hundreds of tonnes of relief supplies have reached cyclone-devastated Myanmar, an Indian official said Thursday.

NEW DELHI: Two Indian ships and two military planes with hundreds of tonnes of relief supplies have reached cyclone-devastated Myanmar, an Indian official said Thursday.

"The distribution of relief supplies has already started. One of their ministers received the ships yesterday," said Sitanshu Kar, a spokesman for the Indian defence ministry.

The ministry said one more military cargo plane carrying food, medicines, clothing and blankets, would be sent Thursday.

Myanmar's official state media have put the number of dead and missing at more than 60,000, but a local military official said an estimated 80,000 people had died alone in the remote district of Labutta.

International aid agencies said Wednesday that they were still being denied permission to enter Myanmar and help desperate survivors of the cyclone, which has left millions homeless and without food and water.
