MUMBAI: The Indian navy searched ships off the western coast on Thursday after militant attacks in Mumbai that left more than 100 people dead, a naval spokesman said.

The sailors were following up reports that the gunmen had entered the city by speed boat after being dropped off by a larger vessel.

"The Indian navy and coast guard have mounted increased surveillance," Captain Manohar Nambiar, spokesman for the western naval command, told AFP.

The navy and the coast guard -- backed by helicopters -- intercepted one merchant vessel, the MV Alfa, before allowing it to proceed.

"We found all its papers were in order," Nambiar said.
