TIANJIN: Over 400 Indian students studying in different medical colleges here are safe, authorities said today after 50 people were killed and over 500 injured in twin explosions at a chemical warehouse in this Chinese city.

"We have got in touch with them, they are safe," Shrila Dutta Kumar, the Consular in the Indian Embassy in Beijing, told PTI.

Besides being a prominent port city and major export hub, Tianjin has a number of medical colleges which, with affordable fee structure have become a major attraction with aspiring Indian medical students.

According to estimates the city has about 400 Indian students.

Most of them apparently went back home for summer holidays, Kumar said.
