NEW DELHI: Amid the political stalemate ahead of November 9 elections in Maldives, Indian High Commissioner in the archipelago Rajeev Shahare’s car was attacked by unidentified persons in capital Male on Monday evening.

Official sources told ET in Delhi that around 7 PM local time rear window pane of the High Commissioner’s car was smashed. There was no one inside the car at the time of the attack. Shahare, a 1986-batch-IFS is a veteran diplomat who had earlier handled volatile West Asia and Northern Africa division.

The local police, sources said, was investigating the matter. While India did not wish to speculate the forces behind the attack, sources said that the unfortunate incident happened when Delhi was trying to ensure that democracy prevailed in Male and there were forces which are opposed to India’s efforts.

It is quite evident from the incident that a signal is being sent to India amid alleged efforts by Presidential hopeful Md Nasheed’s opponents to sabotage the polls that has been rescheduled for November 9.
