Indian cricket coach finds solace in Shiv Sena chief

MUMBAI: Amidst ongoing bashing by politicians, Indian cricket coach Greg Chappell can find some solace in the Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray.

Unlike many of his peers from various parties, the Sena supremo thinks the coach should not be held responsible for the Team India's pathetic performance in South Africa. Many Parliament members have blamed for India’s debacle.

In his hard-hitting editorial in party mouthpiece Samna, Thackeray Sr, however, on Wednesday slammed Indian cricketers for their inability to perform away from home and said coach Greg Chappell could do very little with the bunch of players that he had at his disposal.

"Most of the players are unpredictable lads. It is very tough to predict who will perform and who will not," Mr Thackeray said in a front-page article in his paper. "Chappell does not merit the criticism which he is facing. What can he do if the players are so unpredictable," the Sena chief thinks.

He compared Indian players with buffaloes that have tendency to take long to rise once sit down. "And moreover, the players have nothing at stake as whether they perform well or not, they continue to earn through television commercials," he added.
