Indian boy in Obama’s team, kin jubilant
There is an air of excitement in Maninagar - one of their sons - Nicholas Rathod has been roped in by the US President-elect Barack Obama Indian into the transition team as part of the 15-member high-profile group.
Rathods grandfather Raiji Rathod was a reverend with Maninagar Methodist Church and his father Reverend Shashi Rathod too had roots here. The family still has a home in Maninagar. We are so proud of Nicholas. He always wanted to make it to the White House and he has done it finally, said Nicholas cousin Leroy Thakore.
Thakore said that Nicholas was not born in Ahmedabad but his heart resides in the city as his inspiration is here. He is a great believer in Gandhian ideology and follows in Bapus footsteps. He makes it a point to visit Gandhi Ashram on every visit here. He would buy books on Gandhiji from here for his friends in US too, Thakore told TOI.
Nicholas wife Nisha Parikh is also from Maninagar and the day Nicholas was appointed as member of the highprofile transition team, Nishas grandfather breathed his last.
The news of grandfathers death came as a shock but the entire family was proud of Nicholas achievement. Imagine an Indian, an Amdavadi on US Presidents team! exclaims Thakore.
The family said that Nicholas is also fond of dancing garba and makes it a point to learn to dance to garba steps. In fact, he organised a graba for his wedding as well. He loves pani puri, bhel puri and pav bhaji. He also loves to eat street food, Thakore said.
Nicholass sister Janet too had come to Ahmedabad to study Gujarati from School of Languages in Gujarat University. Both brother and sister are rooted in their culture, he added.
