Indian attire for convocations will be a tribute to APJ Abdul Kalam: UP Governor Ram Naik
LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik has asked state universities to use "Indian attire" for the convocation dress code in place of existing 'colonial era' gowns as a tribute to former President APJ Abdul Kalam.

Earlier in this year, Kalam, during his address at a convocation programme in Haryana, had said that "We should take a vow to have our own dress code for convocations. Time has come to quit the British gown for such occasions."

Former President and popularly known as 'the missile man' passed away on July 27 after he collapsed during a lecture at IIM Shillong.

In a statement issued here today, Naik said, "The convocation dress should be changed. If we use Indian attire in place of the existing convocation dress, it will be a real tribute to Kalam as he also wanted to change the dress."

The Governor also fixed dates for convocation of 23 universities in the state as per their convenience and asked them to prepare the schedule according to it.

"Timely decision should be taken on chief guests, honorary degrees to be given and dress of convocation and its approval should be taken," he added.
