India to supply 150 boats, fishing equipment to Sri Lanka


COLOMBO: India will supply 150 boats and fishing equipment to Sri Lanka at a total cost of Rs 4.5 crore for fishermen in the country's northern district.

Indian High Commissioner Y K Sinha and Secretary, Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development W M M R Adikari signed an MoU in this regard yesterday.

Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Mahinda Amaraweera presided over the ceremony at the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development.

India will gift 150 boats and other fishing equipment to 300 beneficiaries in Mullaithivu, the Indian High Commission here said in a statement.

The project will be implemented in consultation with the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development and relevant local authorities.

The total cost of this project is 100 million Sri Lankan rupees (Rs 4.5 crore), the statement said, adding that the boats and equipment will be procured through a competitive bidding process.
