India strikes back to snare three quick wickets after South Africa's steady start

India snared three quick wickets late in the second session Friday to put the third and final Test against South Africa on an even keel at tea on day one.

KANPUR: India snared three quick wickets late in the second session Friday to put the third and final Test against South Africa on an even keel at tea on day one.

South Africa captain Graeme Smith (69), Hashim Amla (51) and Jacques Kallis (1) fell in the space of 27 deliveries as South Africa moved to 161-4 after two sessions. Ashwell Prince (10) and AB de Villiers (3) were the not out batsmen.

Batting first after winning the toss, Smith added 61 runs for the opening stand with McKenzie (36), who was the only batsman to fall in the first session.

McKenzie was stumped by India's stand-in captain Mahendra Dhoni in leg spinner Piyush Chawla's first over after he played down the wrong line when stepping out for an aggressive shot.

Amla then helped Smith add 92 runs for the second wicket as South Africa took the upper hand.

Smith fell to a bat-pad catch by short-leg Wasim Jaffer off part-time left-arm spinner Yuvraj Singh. His 134-ball innings featured eight fours and two sixes.

Smith's departure prompted a mini-collapse. Amla edged an inswinger from paceman Ishant Sharma onto his stumps. Amla struck six fours off 101 deliveries in his half-century.

Kallis was then bowled as he played the wrong line against offspinner Harbhajan Singh.

Leading 1-0 after thrashing India by an innings and 90 runs in the second test match, South Africa is seeking to clinch the series and displace India from the No. 2 spot in the International Cricket Council's test rankings.

India suffered a blow before the start of play when skipper Anil Kumble was ruled unfit after failing to recover from a groin strain.

Dhoni, who is India's captain in one-day games and Twenty20 matches, became the first wicketkeeper to lead India in tests since the country played its first test in 1932.

India made three changes to the squad that lost the at Ahmedabad. Middle-order batsman Yuvraj Singh, fast bowler Sharma and leg-spinner Chawla came in for Kumble, all-rounder Irfan Pathan and pace bowler Rudra Pratap Singh.
