India should not support US-sponsored resolution against Lanka: Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy

NEW DELHI: India should not support the US-sponsored resolution against Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Commission, Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy today said, terming it as "one-sided" as there is no reference to violations committed by now defunct LTTE.

He said India should move a "substitute" resolution seeking "concrete steps" for devolution of powers to the areas dominated by minority Tamils in Sri Lanka and urge President Mahinda Rajapaksa to complete the process of devolution by the end of this year.

"I urge Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh not to agree to the draft proposed by the US in the United Nations Human Rights Commission regarding alleged human rights excess during the anti-terrorist operation against the LTTE in 2009," he said in a statement.

Swamy said though the resolution appears to be a "tepid attempt" to embarrass the Sri Lankan government, but is severely lacking in any constructive positive content.

"There is no reference to the horrendous human rights violations including murder and rape carried out by LTTE terrorists," he said.

His comments come in the wake of political parties from Tamil Nadu demanding that the government should support the resolution.

He also said the Centre should award Bharat Ratna to Rajapaksa as a measure of creating Indo-Sri Lanka goodwill.
