KOCHI: India should be self-reliant in sonar systems, Vice Admiral Satish Soni, Flag officer Commanding-in-Chief Southern Naval Command, today said.

Lauding the achievements of National Physical Oceanography Laboratory ( NPOL) here, the Vice Admiral emphasised the need to be technologically ahead to equip the Navy with the best and to be self-supporting in sonar systems.

Inaugurating a two-day seminar here on 'Advances in Sonar Concepts, Engineering and Technologies ( ASCENT-II),' he spoke about expanding the horizon in naval warfare in the Indian Ocean.

The seminar is being held in connection with the National Science Day Celebrations. The objective of ASCENT is to showcase the new developments of NPOL in sonar science and engineering in the last few years.

S Anantha Narayanan, distinguished scientist and Director, NPOL, Kochi, said the colloquium was an opportunity for interaction and exchange of ideas between NPOL scientists, users and industry partners for synergy in the future.

23 technical papers will be presented by NPOL scientists at the seminar.
