India seeks US help at NSG

The US should convince NSG countries to supply nuclear fuel and light water reactors to India.

NEW DELHI: Atomic Energy Commission chairman Anil Kakodkar on Tuesday said the US should help convince NSG countries to supply nuclear fuel and light water reactors to India.

Responding to Nicholas Burns’ remarks that it was up to India to convince NSG members to provide fuel and reactors, Mr Kakodkar said it was the "duty of the US to do so". He said India is currently holding negotiations with the NSG countries on the issue.

Mr Kakodkar told reporters in Kalpakkam that there should be no post- and pre-conditions on the import of nuclear reactors.

He was responding to a query on the NSG guidelines that restrict export of such reactors by member countries. Mr Kakodkar, who backed the deal, said there would be no interference in India's three-staged nuclear programme. "India has all the rights to reprocess spent fuel," he said.

He told reporters that eight reactors had been given in-principle approval. These are expected to come up in four different locations.
