India seeks enhancement in Haj quota

India has approached the Saudi Arabian government for increasing quota for its Haj pilgrims.

NEW DELHI: India has approached the Saudi Arabian government for increasing quota for its Haj pilgrims.

"We have requested the Saudi government to enhance India's quota of Haj pilgrims," said, Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed.

He said about of 1.60 lakh pilgrims were waiting to undertake the annual Haj pilgrimage.

"Out of a total quota of 1.57 lakh Haj pilgrims, 1.10 lakh has been distributed to the state Haj committees through the Central Haj Committee," the minister said, adding that the remaining quota is to be utilised by private tour operators.

The Saudi government has said that India's request is "under active consideration".
