India provides $450,000 aid to calamity-hit Madagascar, Malawi

NEW DELHI: India has provided cash assistance of $450,000 to Madagascar and Malawi for the victims of natural calamities in these countries.

While India gave a cash assistance of $200,000 to the Madagascar government to mitigate the consequences of hurricane Chezda there, a $250,000 aid was provided to Malawi which witnessed serious flooding in January-February, External Affairs Ministry said today.

The Indian Ambassador handed over the cheque for the disaster relief to Malagasy Foreign Minister Mme Beatrice Atallah, who conveyed gratitude of the government and people of Madagascar for the assistance provided by the government of India, the ministry said.

In response to a request by the Malawi government for assistance to mitigate the consequences of recent floods, the government made a cash contribution of USD 250,000 to the country, which conveyed deep appreciation of India's contribution at a crucial time as efforts for rehabilitations of flood victims were underway, the MEA added.
