India, Pakistan hold discussion on common rivers

NEW DELHI: Water officials of India and Pakistan met here on Tuesday to discuss various aspects related to six common rivers.
The two sides are understood to have discussed the quality and level of water in the common rivers, particularly Jhelum. The meeting was a prelude to the one between Water Commissioners of the two countries that will take place on Thursday.
The Indian side will be led by Indus Water Commissioner D V Thareja while his counterpart Syed Jamaat Ali Shah will head the Pakistani team. According to the 1960 Indus Water Treaty, India and Pakistan have exclusive right over three of the six common rivers each.
While India has the right over Ravi, Beas and Sutlej, Pakistan has the right over Jhelum, Sindh and Chenab. The mechanism of Indus Water Commissioners has been set up to address issues that may arise concerning these rivers.
