India must become a part of the solution in Syria
In a significant departure from its usual hands-off approach, India's recent vote in favour of the UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution on Syria is welcome
Barring trade negotiations at the WTO, in most cases it has opted to not take sides. However, as the UNSC resolution on Libya last year proved, this strategy has paid little dividend. At a time when the Arab world is in the throes of an historic democratic transition, India can ill afford to watch from the sidelines. In order to become a serious stakeholder in the fast-changing political contours of the Middle East and North Africa, it must be proactive.
It is quite possible for India to maintain an independent foreign policy and yet take a stand. For example, it was India's insistence on an inclusive, Syrian-led political solution that precluded any provision of an international military intervention during the UNSC vote. It was also behind the resolution not insisting that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad step down.
However, the fact that the civil war in Syria has claimed more than 6,000 lives cannot be ignored. New Delhi would do well to work with the Arab League and other stakeholders to persuade the warring factions to come to the talking table. An endorsement of stricter economic sanctions could also be contemplated. It's time India becomes a part of the solution in Syria.
