India Inc to be pro-active toward social commitments

NEW DELHI: Global Compact Society, a UN initiative on corporate social responsibility, will seek to make Indian corporates more proactive in executing their social responsibilities, its president R S Sharma said on Friday.

Speaking at the 3rd Annual General Meeting of the Indian arm of the United Nations movement, he asked the participating corporations to suggest a methodology to turn CSR activities in India into a movement.

Sharma, who is also Chairman and Managing Director of Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC), called upon corporates to take initiatives and integrate CSR in their business model pro-actively, instead of getting involved in repairs reactively.

For this, he stressed the need for greater interaction and synergy in CSR activities among different corporates and various sections of the society.

Global Compact Society of India comprises of 127 leading Indian organisations participating in the initiative launched by the former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. Members include ONGC, Infosys, Tata, Wipro and Thermax.
