NEW DELHI: The health ministry has said that India has been able to reduce pace of Covid-19 compared to other countries, although the number of confirmed cases was over 1.06 lakh on Wednesday, from a few hundred cases when the lockdown began on March 25.

“The focus on clinical management and recovery has resulted in improvement in the recovery rate. More than 39.6% of the confirmed cases have recovered bringing the total to 42,298 recoveries. This is a reminder that the disease is curable and the clinical management protocols adopted by India are effective,” said joint secretary Lav Agarwal.

The ministry released comparative statistics with countries that had most number of cases. Compared to global statistics, where there are 62.3 cases per lakh, India has only 7.9 cases per lakh. Mortality rate per lakh population was 4.2 globally and 0.2 for India. “The relatively low death figures represent timely case identification and clinical management of cases,” said Agarwal.

Case fatality rate is increasing in some states. It is more than the national average in West Bengal, Gujarat, Maharashtra and MP.
