India funds Nepal project to counter Kheri floods

LAKHIMPUR: India has come forward to fund Pancheshwar multi-purpose project of Nepal worth Rs 1500 crore for countering the Kheri floods in the region here.

The Indian government has resolved to fund the Pancheshwar multi-purpose project of Nepal on Mahakali river to the tune of Rs 1500 crore after a delegation of MPs visited Nepal and submitted their report to Modi government.

"Located at Narayan Ghat of Dharchula in Nepal, the 315 meters high Pancheshwar power project dam on Mahakali river would be the second largest dam in the world with a capacity of 6720 Mega Watt power production," Kheri MP Ajay Kumar Mishra told PTI.

"The project would regulate and control the free flow of Karnali and Mohana rivers which cause floods in Kheri, Pilibhit and other Terai districts," he said.

Mishra noted that the project would not only check the floods in Kheri but put a check on losses of lives and properties.

"India has also reached into an agreement with Nepal to procure additional electricity produced by the Pancheshwar project which would suffice the power needs of Kheri," he said.

The Kheri MP said that floods caused by Nepal rivers including Mohana, Karnali, Suheli, Kaudiyala and others was a matter of serious concern in Kheri since long as these floods not only caused damage of humans, cattle lives and properties but hindered the development of Pallia, Nighasan, Lakhimpur and Dhaurehra tehsils.
