India declare at 616, Laxman slams ton
Helped by excellent centuries from VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly, India declared their first innings at the total of 616 for the loss of 5 wickets on the second day of the second Test.
The declaration came in the 153rd over of the Indian innings. Laxman remained unbeaten on 112, while MS Dhoni scored a brilliant fifty, his eighth in Tests.
Left-handed Ganguly cracked 102 and shared a 163-run stand for the fifth wicket with Vangipurappu Laxman. The duo piled on the agony of a weak Pakistan attack after opener Wasim Jaffer (202) fell shortly after reaching his double century.
Jaffer, overnight 192, struck two boundaries off quick bowler Shoaib Akhtar to reach the second double hundred of his career after the hosts resumed at 352 for three. The stylish opener, who shared in two century partnerships on Friday, was caught behind flashing at Sohail Tanvir off the left-arm quick's first ball off the day.
But Ganguly and Laxman made no mistakes as the left-hander raced to his 14th century. Nippy Tanvir troubled Laxman with his away-going deliveries early but the batsman soon got on top on a placid Kolkata pitch that offered little assistance to seam bowlers.
Mohammad Sami, starting the test after a bout of chest infection, showed immense will in toiling hard while Shoaib Akhtar, who was in hospital with fever before the test, struggled through 11 overs on Saturday. Ganguly, playing in his 98th Test, drove fluently and punched hard for his first test century in his home ground and against this opposition.
