The number of districts under strict virus watch has gone down, data showed.
Covid-19 cases in the country jumped by 8,909 since yesterday's last update to reach 2,07,615, data from Union Health ministry revealed.

As of 8 am today, deaths so far were at 5,815. As many as 1,00,303 people have been cured/discharged.

As per government data, over 50% of Covid fatalities in India were among the country's elderly (60+) who make up only 10% of the total population. 73% of total deaths were among those who had co-morbidities.


The data, made public yesterday, showed that 38% of total deaths were in the 60-74 age group (8% of India's population). 12% of the total deaths were in those above 74 years, who constitute 2% of the country's population.

Also, India's fatality rate is only 2.82%, much lower than the global fatality rate of 6.13%, the data showed. Going by the data, fatality from Covid per lakh population in India is 0.41, compared to the global fatality of 4.9.

Meanwhile, the national Covid positive rate has continued to move up. On June 1, it was 5% compared to 4.6% ten days earlier. The weekly test positivity rate has also risen to reach near 7%, from 6% on May 22.

According to an ET report, the number of districts under high virus watch has gone down. Currently, there are 17 districts under strict virus vigil owing to a high number (a Covid positive rate of 20 or more) of positive cases — down from May 22 when there were as many as 25 such districts.

City-wise, Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmadabad and Chennai have consistently topped the Covid positive list. Last week saw a new entrant to the list — Gurgaon.
