India witnesses biggest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases with more than 6700 cases in last 24 hours
India reported well over 6,700 coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours — the fifth peak in day-to-day rise in as many days. Following this, the country’s total case count crossed 1.31 lakh, just five days after the tally went past the 1 lakh mark.

According to Union Health ministry's daily update, total cases as of 8 am stand at 1,31,868. There have been 3,867 fatalities so far, while the number of cured/discharged stands at 54,441.

Cases were reported from 27 states over the past 24 hours, which shows that the virus has now reached virtually every corner of the country. Yesterday's tally included the first positive case in Sikkim, the only state/UT in India that had remained virus-free.


Maharashtra continued to be the hardest-hit state by far, with 47,190 cases and 1,577 deaths.

Globally, total cases stood at 52,88,392 as of morning hours today. 3,40,875 people have died worldwide so far.
