India coronavirus count, May 5: Steep spike in cases, deaths jump sharply too

The official number of Covid-19 deaths crossed the 1,500 mark in India today, Health ministry's daily update showed.

According to the update at 8 am, total cases in India went up to 46,433 in the past 24 hours. There have been 1,568 deaths, and 12,727 people have been cured/discharged.

As per ICMR website, 11,91,946 samples had been tested for the virus till 9 am today.


Today's was the biggest single-day jump in numbers for both cases and deaths.

With 14,541 cases, Maharashtra remains the worst-affected state. Gujarat, with 5,804 cases, is second.

The global numbers were at 35,82,469 as of morning hours today. There have been 2,51,365 deaths worldwide till now.
