India committed to nuclear disarmament

NEW DELHI:External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee has said that India is committed to non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament.
Addressing an international conference on 'Towards a World Free of Nuclear Weapons' here on Monday, Mukherjee also cautioned against the threat of non-state actors acquiring weapons of mass destruction.
"Unlike 1988, India today is a nuclear weapon state. However, this does not diminish in any manner our commitment to nuclear disarmament.
We are ready to support multilateral negotiations leading to an early conclusion of a nuclear weapons convention prohibiting the development, production, testing, deployment, stockpiling, threat or use of nuclear weapons and providing for their elimination," he said.
Earlier, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh advocated the need for a collective approach in anchoring an international partnership to ensure universal nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation in a time-bound manner.
India has recently submitted a working paper on nuclear disarmament to the UN General Assembly, containing initiatives on nuclear disarmament.
These proposals have also been submitted before the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva. They are a set of proposals for achieving the goal of a nuclear weapons free world.
