India, China to check melting of glaciers, says PM

NEW DELHI: India has taken up the issue of climate change and melting of glaciers with China, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Thursday by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. “I myself had raised the issue with the Chinese president, and it was agreed that there should be more discussions for modalities to work out a joint solution,” the prime minister said. Chinese President Hu Jintao had visited India in November last year, when the two leaders had held bilateral talks.

The Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change has found that Himalayan glaciers are melting faster than the glaciers in any other part of the world. The Chinese Academy of Sciences has also found that glaciers in the Tibetan Plateau are melting quickly.

The prime minister said it was beyond doubt that if glaciers melt it would have a catastrophic effect. He added that technical studies were to be conducted. “The melting of the glaciers will ultimately trigger more droughts, expand desertification and increase sand storms. Melting also threatens disruption of water supply as many rivers emanate from the Himalayas,” minister of state for environment and forests Namo Narain Meena said.
