India asks its nationals in coup-hit Mali to exercise caution

NEW DELHI: Expressing deep concern over the developments in military coup-hit Mali, India today advised its nationals to exercise caution and remain in contact with the country's mission there.

"The Government of India expresses its deep concern over the recent developments in Mali and calls for respect of the Constitutional order and democratic process in that country," MEA spokesperson said.

He said India welcomes the statements by the United Nations Security Council, the African Union and the ECOWAS on the developments in Mali.

"The Ministry of External Affairs is in touch with the Embassy of India in Bamako. The small Indian community in Mali is safe. The members of the community have been advised to exercise caution and remain in contact with the Embassy," he said.

India will monitor the evolving situation in Mali, he said.

President Amadou Toumani Toure of Mali was ousted in a coup, climaxing what began on Wednesday as a mutiny over the government's response to rekindled Tuareg insurrection turned as soldiers seized control of the presidential palace and state broadcaster.
