India asks Australia to improve security for its citizens
India today conveyed its growing concern to Australia over recurring attacks on Indians there and asked the country to take all necessary steps to improve safety and security of its citizens there.

During a meeting, Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi told visiting Victorian Premier John Brumby that New Delhi was worried about continuing attacks on Indians and asked him to keep New Delhi informed about follow up action against those involved in the crimes.
On his part, Brumby tried to ease concerns about the safety of Indians living there and said it will not tolerate any attacks on international students and that strong punishment was being given to those involved in such crimes.
Admitting that some cases might have had racial motivations, he said the Government has decided to increase the jail term of those found to be involved in racial attacks.
In the meeting, both sides also discussed the possibility of having group housing and separate transportation facilities for international students.
The Premier of Victorian state, which witnessed maximum number of attacks on Indian students, said all necessary steps are being taken to prevent such crimes.
Officials said the Indian side has requested the Australian side to ensure punishment to all those involved in crimes against Indians.
