India and Pakistan must rule out war forever: Sharif

Former premier Nawaz Sharif, who is returning to Islamabad tomorrow after a seven-year exile, said India and Pakistan must rule out war between the two countries forever.

LONDON: Former premier Nawaz Sharif, who is returning to Islamabad tomorrow after a seven-year exile, said India and Pakistan must rule out war between the two countries forever.

Sharif, during whose premiership the Lahore declaration was signed on February 21, 1999 with his then Indian counterpart Atal Behari Vajpayee, also said he had every intention to "pick up threads from where we left off" in the Indo-Pak peace process.

"The Lahore declaration is a very important declaration signed by both prime ministers. And I think I will take things forward from that and we will try and resolve all the issues peacefully," he told the media in London.

The former premier said there can't be a war between India and Pakistan as both countries are "nuclear".

"So a war is ruled out, we must rule out a war forever," he said, adding "but there should be an urge on both sides to resolve our outstanding issues across the table."

Asked whether Kashmir is going to be a priority issue, Sharif replied in the affirmative. "Kashmir is certainly one of the main issues," he added.
