Independents make beeline, Yeddyurappa ready to become CM

B S Yeddyurappa, who was on Monday formally elected as the leader of the legislature party, will be sworn in as the chief minister on Wednesday.

NEW DELHI: With the party managing to enlist the backing of all six independent MLAs, the BJP was on Monday set to form the next government in Karnataka. Mr B S Yeddyurappa, who was on Monday formally elected as the leader of the legislature party, will be sworn in as the chief minister on Wednesday.

By late on Monday evening, the party, sources said, was grappling with the problem of plenty as all the six independent legislators had promised support. ``The entire lot is willing to support us. But we dont want to take the backing of all six MLAs as that would mean accommodating all of them in the council of ministers, or anointing them as heads of boards and corporations, a senior leader said.

The BJP, on its own, has a strength of 110 in the 224-member assembly. In the results to the assembly polls declared on Sunday, only six independents could scrape through. These include a BJP rebel, Mr Shivaraj Tangadagi, who was elected from Kanakgiri, and a former JD(S) leader, Mr Goolihatti D Shekhar (Hosadurga). The two legislators attended the BJP legislature party meeting in Bangalore on Monday.

There are four Congress rebels who made it to the assembly as independents. These include Mr D Sudhakara (Hiriyur), Mr Venkataramanappa (Pavagada), Mr P M Narendraswamy (Malavalli) and Mr R Varthur Prakash (Kolar). Among these, Mr Sudhakara and Mr Venkataramanappa had already come out in the open with their support for the BJP.

Accompanied by BJP general secretaries Arun Jaitley, who scripted the partys victory in Karnataka, and Mr Ananth Kumar, the 66-year-old Yeddyurappa will call on governor Rameshwar Thakur on Tuesday to formally stake claim to form the government.

Mr Yeddyurappa had told the party MLAs that he would meet the governor to stake his claim to form the government only after enlisting the support of at least three independents that will be required to survive a floor test.
