NEW DELHI: The cleanliness and sanitation drive along with other programmes were initiated in the national capital today as part of the Independence Day week celebrations announced by Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung.

The sanitation drive was carried out in the east and north east districts which witnessed active participation of officials and sanitation staff.

During the drive, several office complexes were cleaned up and the area was sprayed to prevent breeding of bacteria and mosquitoes.

Shahdara District also initiated the drive starting from Deputy Commissioner's office complex in Nand Nagri.

South and south east districts of Revenue Department organized a number of events including a race competition in Okhla Government Colony and another race competition at Nehru Yuva Kendra in Mehrauli in which around 100 children participated. Gifts such as geometry box, thermos and sports shoes were distributed amongst the winning candidates.

Besides that, the Gender Resource Centre organised rallies for spreading awareness in the area to mobilise people on the theme of Independence Day and to make them aware of their duties and rights. The rallies were organized at Hari Nagar Extn. Part-III, Madanpur Khadar, Batla House, Jamia Nagar, Jasola Village, Lalkuan, Tanki Road, Meethapur, Govindpuri, Kotla Mubarakpur village etc.

Another rally was arranged at Nehru Yuva Kendra in Jaitpur.

North District has launched "spirit of freedom" which will focus on involving citizen, civil societies and other agencies in the cleanliness drive.

The RWAs were involved in the cleanliness drive and afforestation in the open area near the park and Barat Ghar in their localities.

The RWA members and the residents of the area also took a pledge to stop female foeticide as the female participants performed a nukkad natak on the issue.

As part of the celebrations, west district planted about 150 sapplings at the park opposite to its District Magistrate Office.
