New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will speak from the ramparts of Red Fort on August 15, but there will be fewer dignitaries in the audience in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic. In an advisory on Thursday, the Union home ministry has asked states and Union Territories (UTs) also to avoid large congregations during the Independence Day celebrations and use technology in the best possible manner.

“The ceremony at Red Fort will consist of Guard of Honour to the Prime Minister, firing of 21-gun salute, speech by the PM and the singing of the national anthem,” the home ministry said in its communication.

It has suggested the states and UTs to invite Covid-19 warriors, such as doctors, sanitation workers and healthcare professionals, in recognition of their services in fighting the pandemic. “Some persons cured from Covid-19 may also be invited,” said the ministry advisory.
