NEW DELHI: It is not correct to say that overall corruption has increased in the country, the government said in Parliament on Wednesday citing figures that adverse findings given by the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) against officers had come down in 2018 compared to 2016.

“As per the data made available by Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), the total number of advice given by the Commission on Criminal Proceedings, Major Penalty Proceedings, Minor Penalty Proceedings and Administrative Action and Closure etc. has come down from 2088 in 2016 to 1889 in 2018. Therefore, it is not correct to say that overall corruption has increased in the country,” Minister of State in PMO, Jitendra Singh said in a reply to a question. He also said no officer accused of corruption has managed escape to another country.

The Minister however disclosed that CBI has registered 61 regular cases relating to corruption and disproportionate assets against 86 number of IAS/IPS/IRS officers since 2016. “During the last 3 years i.e. 2016, 2017, 2018 & 2019 (up to 30.06.19), 26 IAS/IPS/IRS Officers figuring in 20 regular cases have been convicted. In two cases confiscation of properties to the extent of disproportionate assets are ordered by the Court,” the Minister replied.

He also said that the Central Government is committed to its policy of “Zero Tolerance Against Corruption” and has taken several measures to combat corruption.
