In search of Assam NRC proof in Bihar, UP

GUWAHATI: Those whose names have failed to appear in the final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) are busy collecting documents and even travelling to other states to meet the formalities required to get their names included.

One such person is Ravi Dubey of Tinsukia. He has gone to Samastipur in Bihar to collect documents as his name was missing from the draft. When he approached NRC Seva Kendra, he was told that inadequate legacy data was the reason for this.

NRC, meant to weed out illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, is being updated based on the 1971 electoral rolls. The process requires establishing links with their forefathers.


Dubey told ET, “I will try and bring some documents to establish my link with my forefathers. We’ve been in Assam for three generations. ”

Like Dubey, many people have gone to Bihar, UP, Tripura and West Bengal to collect documents.

Some have gone there to ensure their documents are verified. Around 57,2809 lakh documents were sent to other states and 403 documents sent to 37 foreign countries for verification.

Ladoo Devi of Doom Doomda submitted land papers written in Sanskrit as proof of her link to her ancestors.

However, her papers was rejected. Her parental home is in Muzzafarpur in Bihar and she moved to Assam after her marriage. “I’m not sure why my name is not there"
