In quest for N-commerce, India reaches out to Nordic nations
India reached out to the Nordic nations, who are members of the Nuclear Suppliers Group, to boost bilateral cooperation.
National Security Advisor M K Narayanan held a rare meeting with the Foreign Ministers of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland in Stockholm to apprise them of India's increasing role as a global player.
His participation in a biannual meeting of the Foreign Ministers in Stockholm earlier this week assumes significance as it is quite rare that an official from a country outside the region is invited to such a gathering.
The five Nordic countries had in the past voiced reservations about lifting the curbs on India from conducting nuclear commerce and their support is key to New Delhi getting a waiver from the NSG.
As part of the Indo-US deal, after signing the safeguards agreement with global nuclear watchdog IAEA, India will have to approach the NSG for changes in its rules to allow international community to have trade with it in the field.
However, it is not clear whether the NSA managed to seek the backing of the the North European nations, in its quest for international civil nuclear cooperation to meet its energy requirements.
Narayanan also had one-to-one talks with Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt on whose invitation he travelled to Sweden from April 15-18.
The two reviewed bilateral and strategic ties and discussed issues of common concern.
