GUWAHATI: Authorities dealing with the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam have identified 89 names of declared foreigners and their descendants on the final list prepared last year.

“We are readying an area wise list of such people,” a senior NRC officer, who does not want to be named, told ET.

Recently, the state coordinator of NRC, Hitesh Dev Sarma, had asked all deputy commissioners in Assam to provide details of “ineligible persons” who have been included in the NRC.

Such ineligible people include doubtful voters and declared foreigners and their descendants, and those with cases pending in the foreigners’ tribunals, Sarma said in a notice addressed to the deputy commissioners and district registrars of citizen registration of all districts.

NGO Assam Public Works (APW), which is one of the petitioners in the NRC case in the Supreme Court, had sought 100% re-verification of the NRC process. It said the inclusion of “80 lakh illegal immigrants, including jihadis” on the list had necessitated this.

The NGO had pointed out a case where a government schoolteacher, despite allegedly being declared as a foreigner by a tribunal in Assam’s Morigaon district, was involved in the preparation of NRC.

The final NRC published in August last year found a total of 3,11,21,004 people eligible for inclusion in the registry, leaving out 1,906,657 people from those who had applied for inclusion.
